The City of Portsmouth welcomes Julius “Dr. J” Erving, George “The Iceman” Gervin, Charlie Scott and other teammates at this special event to honor and celebrate the Virginia Squires, “tipping off” the 70th Annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (P.I.T.) in epic style with a “legends” theme. ABOUT THE SQUIRES

The Virginia Squires of the ABA were based in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1970 to 1976. In 1976, the upstart ABA league merged with the older NBA, injecting a needed infusion of flash, fluidity, style, color and attitude that forever changed the game, with Dr. J leading the way. The Squires were the only professional sports team the area has ever known.
